Recovering backup data

What is a backup and why is it important to PERIFACT?

READ QUIETLY AND ATTENTIVELY!

A backup is a copy of your important files, which you can use to restore your data if something goes wrong with your computer. This is just as important for your PERIFACT-files as for your Word documents, Excel files and other data.

Why is a backup important?

  • Prevents data loss: Computers can crash, get stolen or contract viruses. Without a backup, you lose all your data.
  • Peace of mind: With a recent backup, you can sleep easy knowing you can restore your data if something happens.
  • Time savings: Restoring a backup is much faster than manually re-entering everything.

How do I back up my PERIFACT files?

PERIFACT makes automatic a .ZIP-file containing all your database data at each program shutdown. You can use these files to restore your data.

PERIFACT does not store data in the cloud. This means that you are responsible for making and keeping your own backups.

Where do you find your PERIFACT backups?

PERIFACT automatically creates backups of your important data so that you can restore them if something goes wrong with your computer. The location of the backup files can be found at the bottom of the PERIFACT screen:

1. Open PERIFACT.

2. Look at the bottom of the screen.

You will see here the name of the folder where the backups are stored. Normally this is:
C:C:³"YourName³

Tip: Double-click on the folder name at the bottom of the PERIFACT screen to open the folder!

Important to know:

  • In older versions of PERIFACT, the location of the backups may be different. If you have changed the location, you obviously know it better than we do!
  • The files in the folder C:Program Files (x86)-Perifact are not important. These are installation files and do not contain billing data.

Regular backup is important!

We recommend that you regularly back up your PERIFACT backup files. This ensures that you can always restore your data in case of unexpected problems.

I don't remember my PERIFACT version? SA or XL?

You can tell from the backup files themselves whether it was the SA or XL version. This is because the version is included in the file name and so is the date and time of the backup.

I don't remember my license code!

The license code is also in the backup. So once you restore the backup, the license code is already there. You don't have to look it up or enter it again.

Restoring backup - other method

In addition to the method with downloading a new version, you can also restore the backup within the already installed PERIFACT environment.

Notice:

  • This method overwrites all existing data in PERIFACT with the data from the backup.
  • So make sure you have a proper and complete backup have before proceeding.

Steps:

  1. Open PERIFACT.
  2. Go to the main menu EXTRA'S > RESTORE BACKUP.
  3. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the .ZIP file with the backup selected.
  4. Wait for the restore to complete. This may take several minutes, depending on the size of the backup.
  5. After the restore, your PERIFACT environment is restored with the data from the backup.

Manual backup restore

Notice: This is a fallback and should be used only when the automatic method (as described above) fails. Use of this method may result in data loss if it is not executed correctly.

Prerequisites:

  • You are a PERIFACT-SA user (PERIFACT-XL users have a more complex structure and this method is not appropriate).
  • You have the backup .ZIP file saved.
  • You know where the PERIFACT files on your computer.

Steps:

  1. Close PERIFACT. This is crucial to avoid corrupting data.
  2. Find it backup .ZIP file. The file name contains the PERIFACT version, date and time.
  3. Unzip the .ZIP file. This can be done with a program such as WinRAR or 7-Zip.
  4. In the extracted files, find the file perifact.sqlite. This file contains all your invoices and contacts.
  5. Move the perifact.sqlite file to the directory where the original PERIFACT files are located. Overwrite the existing file if necessary.
  6. Restart PERIFACT.

Important:

  • Always make a new backup before performing a manual restore.
  • Be careful When moving files. Make sure you move the right files to the right location.

PERIFACT-XL: Restoring backup to a new computer

Do you have PERIFACT-XL and want to transfer the backup to another computer? If so, follow these steps:

1. Restore the backup

First, perform the steps described in the previous section ("Where to find your PERIFACT backups?") to restore the backup. This is also called a RESTORE mentioned.

2. Deauthorize the old computer

  1. Go to the menu SETTINGS > MULTI USER NETWORK.
  2. Select the tab [Licenses - authorize computer].
  3. Choose the old computer which is no longer used.
  4. Click on the button [Revoke license selected computer]

This prevents licensing problems. In fact, PERIFACT counts how many computers want to use the data and thus you disable the old computer.
